Planning your trip

To ensure that you book appropriate flights, please consider the following information:

  • Registration begins at 08:30 on Monday 9 July, 2007.
  • Talks are scheduled from the morning of Monday 9 July until 16:00 or 17:00 on Thursday 12 July, 2007.
  • The banquet is scheduled for 7:00 pm on Wednesday 11 July, 2007.

We will try to arrange for a registration desk in the lobby of the conference hotel on the evening of Sunday 8 July. Please visit this page for details as the conference approaches.

Conference delegates must make their own travel arrangements. All of the information required is listed below and/or on the web sites for which URLs are provided.

Traveling by Air

Please note that there are several cities in Canada with names similar to St. John’s. When booking your transportation, make sure NOT to confuse St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador with Saint John, New Brunswick. The airport code for St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador is YYT.

We recommend that you book your flights early because summer availability can be a limited.

St. John’s is currently serviced by three airlines (listed below), and there are direct flights available from several major centers.

Airlines

Air Canada/Tango (direct flights from Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, and London)

Continental Airlines (direct flights from Newark)

WestJet (direct flights from Halifax and Toronto)

Car Rentals

Most of the major car rental companies have offices in St. John’s, but there is also a shortage of cars during the summer tourist season. Definitely book well in advance if you plan on renting a vehicle and do not expect to be able to find one at the last minute.

Traveling by Sea (via ferry)

Year-round vehicle and passenger ferry service is provided by Marine Atlantic between North Sydney, Nova Scotia, and Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. Crossing time is 6 hours. (This ferry connects with the trans-island bus service operated by DRL Coach Lines). Cabins are limited in number so book early if you wish to travel in comfort.

From mid-June to mid-September, an additional ferry operates between North Sydney and Argentia in eastern Newfoundland, which is 45 kilometres from Route 1 and 131 kilometres from the provincial capital of St. John's. Crossing time is 12-14 hours.
